EPO elects new President

The Administrative Council of the European Patent Office have finally elected the new President of the Office.

Under the European Patent Convention, a qualified majority of three-quarters of the votes cast by the Organisation's member states is required for the decision on the appointment of a new President. Several unsuccessful rounds of voting, in which none of the candidates achieved the necessary majority, had been held since the current president, Alison Brimelow, stepped down. In the latest round of voting held on 1 March 2010, however, Benoit Battistelli was elected to the post.

Currently M. Battistelli is Director General of the French National Institute of Industrial Property. His five-year term as President of the EPO will begin on 1 July 2010.
