Mewburn Ellis is the forward-looking IP firm. Over 150 years old, but very much with a focus on the future, we are at the top of our profession. We are ‘Top Tier’ in Legal 500, ‘Band 1’ in Chambers & Partners UK, ‘Gold Ranked’ for EPO work and ‘Top Tier’ in IAM Patent 1000, as well as being ‘Recommended’ in MIP IP Stars and WTR. There has never been a more exciting time to work for us. We have seen significant sustained growth over several years across our five offices in Bristol, Cambridge, London, Manchester and Munich. Maybe it’s time to join.

The role

We’re looking for a well-established, highly independent and experienced senior attorney to join our successful Chemistry and Materials practice group. This is a newly created role that is responsive to sustained long-term growth and future expansion aspirations. Currently we have over 40 practitioners within the Chemistry and Materials team, across all levels and all disciplines spanning polymer technologies, industrial chemistry, advanced materials, consumer products, food technology, and pharma. We work seamlessly and collaboratively with colleagues in our Life Sciences and Engineering and Technology practice groups.  See more about our team and our work here.

Joining at this time offers a great opportunity for you to develop your expertise and build a long-term career in a highly future-focussed, progressive team. In the role you can expect to work predominantly with our industrial chemistry, materials and polymer technology clients, with the focus being on prosecution, drafting and opinion work. You will bring your deep expertise and client relationship skills to the position. We envisage this being primarily a fee-earning role, with no business development necessary unless this is an area of interest, in which case we can look to accommodate and develop this with you as part of your ongoing development (our PDR process).

Joining us, you’ll enjoy transparency when it comes to defining your career path and operate in an environment that is friendly, collaborative and developmental. You will work independently but will benefit from close working relationships with the local team of attorneys, business support colleagues and IP specialists and due to our structure and ways of working you’ll be freed up to concentrate on what you do best!

We have a forward-looking, ambitious and inclusive approach at Mewburn Ellis and as an attorney here, you can expect to develop your full potential as we will invest in you to allow you to grow personally and professionally.

What’s in it for you?

•    Competitive salary & bonus scheme
•    Hybrid office and home working (50/50)
•    Flexible working hours
•    30 days leave (exc. Bank Holidays)
•    Health scheme including Health Assurance
•    Generous pension scheme, enhanced family leave
•    Cycle to work scheme, interest-free season travel ticket loan
•    Firmwide discretionary bonus scheme
•    Paid day off for charitable endeavours
•    Discount Voucher Scheme, Electric Car Scheme
•    Workplace ISA, Healthcare cash plan, Care concierge

You’ll hone your skills through development reviews and regular input from experienced partners. And because we are merit-based, joining us means your career progression is in your own hands.

Our successful growth story is down to our people. And we take the wellbeing of our colleagues seriously - offering a huge suite of initiatives to de-stress, engage and enthuse. We care about wider society too, and the communities in which we operate - read about our Forward Community Programme to find out more about how we're giving back.

About you

You’ll have at least seven years’ post-EQE experience. You’ll be quality-driven, highly organised and with a demonstrable track-record of independent working and well-developed ability to strategically manage client relationships and support service delivery as part of wider client and sector teams. You will most likely be an experienced and high-performing Senior Associate, Managing Associate or Director.

We are a collaborative firm so being personable, approachable, with a willingness to continuously learn will also help! If you are excited by the prospect of this role and where a career with Mewburn Ellis could take you and can work from any of our UK offices (Bristol, Cambridge, London, Manchester), we’d love to hear from you.
