Mewburn Ellis is the forward-looking IP firm. Over 150 years old, but very much with a focus on the future, we are at the top of our profession. We are ‘Top Tier’ in Legal 500, ‘Band 1’ in Chambers & Partners UK, ‘Gold Ranked’ for EPO work and ‘Top Tier’ in IAM Patent 1000, as well as being ‘Recommended’ in MIP IP Stars and WTR. There has never been a more exciting time to work for us. We have seen significant sustained growth over several years across our five offices in Bristol, Cambridge, London, Manchester and Munich. Maybe it’s time to join us on our journey.

The role

We’re looking for a high-performing Telecoms specialist to join our highly successful Technology & Engineering team. We can accommodate any level of role, potentially from part-qualified and beyond. Naturally we would expect the level of experience and exposure to be commensurate with the level of role. This is a newly created role as a result of expansion which will help us to grow our capacity and capability further and provide a great opportunity for you to develop your expertise and build a long-term career.

With a total headcount of 50 attorneys across all levels the Mewburn Ellis Technology & Engineering team is Europe’s largest, so expect to be working directly with some well-known brands in the 5G and 6G space. The telecoms team is 10-15 and dispersed throughout our UK locations so wherever you’re based you’ll be working alongside experts in your field as well as collaborating across offices both within and beyond the Technology and Engineering Practice Group.

The work will be predominantly telecoms-based, with around 50% of your time spent on drafting applications in the telecoms field, with a particular emphasis on preparing Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). The remainder of your time will be spent working on prosecution and opposition for a range of other clients, including SMEs and foreign attorney firms.

We envisage this being primarily a fee-earning role, with no business development necessary unless this is an area of interest, in which case we can look to accommodate and develop this as part of your CPD. The role is therefore a relatively traditional attorney position – turnaround times can be quick so expect a fast-paced and commercially-focussed position.

Joining us, you’ll enjoy transparency when it comes to defining your career path and operate in an environment that is friendly, collaborative and developmental. You will work independently but will benefit from close working relationships with the local team of attorneys, business support colleagues and IP specialists and due to our structure and ways of working you’ll be freed up to concentrate on what you do best!

We have a forward-looking, ambitious and inclusive approach at Mewburn Ellis and as an Associate, Senior Associate or IP Director, you can expect to develop your full potential as we will invest in you to allow you to grow personally and professionally.

What’s in it for you?

•    Competitive salary & bonus scheme
•    Hybrid office and home working (50/50)
•    Flexible working hours
•    30 days leave (exc. Bank Holidays)
•    Health scheme including Health Assurance
•    Generous pension scheme, enhanced family leave
•    Cycle to work scheme, interest-free season travel ticket loan
•    Firmwide discretionary bonus scheme
•    Paid day off for charitable endeavours
•    Discount Voucher Scheme, Electric Car Scheme
•    Workplace ISA, Medicash, Care concierge

You’ll hone your skills as a Patent Attorney through development reviews and regular input from experienced partners. And because we are merit-based, joining us means your career progression is in your own hands.

Our successful growth story is down to our people. And we take the wellbeing of our colleagues seriously - offering a huge suite of initiatives to de-stress, engage and enthuse.
