Read our law and practice guidesNiles is a chemical and materials patent attorney who supports a range of innovative companies in navigating all parts of the patent life cycle.
Niles works with a range of UK-based direct clients, spanning start-ups and universities through to SMEs and multinationals. He has extensive experience in invention capture and drafting patent application in the energy storage and clean-tech space. Niles takes a keen interest in bio-derived materials, and helps clients protect innovation in bio-based feedstocks, refrigerants, colourants and inks. He specialises in protecting innovation at the borders of traditional chemistry, including the intersection of chemistry and electronics, software and cheminformatics,
He also manages the prosecution of patent portfolios worldwide. Recognised for a client centric approach, Niles advises with a global commercial strategy in mind, which looks to maximize enforcement, licensing and investment opportunities for his clients. Aside from growing patent portfolios, Niles is skilled at providing freedom to operate (FTO) advice, to support organisations through product launches and funding rounds.

Niles works with a number of top-ranked UK universities alongside companies ranging from start-ups through to multinationals based in the UK, US and Japan.
Background
Niles started his career in patent law in 2018 at Mewburn Ellis, after obtaining a first class degree in Chemistry from Oxford University. He went on to qualify as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2021 and a European Patent Attorney in 2022, and was promoted to Senior Associate in April 2025. While at Oxford University, Niles researched novel perylene diimide based macrocycles for anion recognition and sensing applications.
Professional Career
Niles works closely with a number of Japanese and US attorney firms, and regularly visits the US. In 2024, he undertook a secondment to US attorney firm Wolf Greenfield.
Niles works closely with Indian counsel, and handles all the firm’s Indian Working Requirements. He delivered a CIPA seminar on changes to Indian working statement practice, which was attended by over 200 UK attorneys and paralegals.
Inside Mewburn Ellis, Niles is imbedded within the Learning Development team. As well as delivering a series of preparatory tutorials for the UK patent exams and European Patent Administrators Certificate, Niles develops and oversees Mewburn Ellis’ training program for the new European Patent Exams.
