Mewburn & Wellbeing of Women Committee

Our Women’s committee are proud to support the UK’s only charity working across all areas of women’s gynaecological and reproductive health, with a donation of £30,000. Their pioneering work is helping to transform healthcare for women and girls, tackling taboos and driving change where it’s urgently needed.

Since 1964, the charity has invested over £75 million in research, leading to major breakthroughs including the use of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and the discovery of the link between HPV and cervical cancer, paving the way for the UK’s first preventative school vaccination programme.

Amongst many of the ongoing research projects they have going on below are just some examples that our donation will help contribute to:

  • Fertility contraception & abortion care; such as determining the accessibility and equitability of abortion services in England and Wales since the introduction of telemedicine.
  • Gynaecological cancers; such as to see if measuring a particular kind of cell in ovarian cancer tumours (EMT cells) can predict how well patients will respond to different kinds of treatment
  • Menstrual & gynaecological health; such as understanding from healthcare professional the barriers they face in diagnosing vulval skin diseases and use this knowledge to improve earlier diagnosis and treatment.
  • Pregnancy birth & beyond; such as exploring how midwives and interpreters can work better together to help women discuss their mental health during and after pregnancy.
  • Sexual health; such as identifying the gaps in female genital mutilation (FGM) reconstruction clinical trials, to establish the top priorities for future FGM research and ensure that surgeries are safe and effective.

“Women’s health has long been underfunded and overlooked. This charity is leading the way in changing that, through research, education, and advocacy. We’re proud to support their work and help build a future where every woman and girl receives the care and respect they deserve,” said Fran Salisbury, Partner and Women’s Champion at Mewburn Ellis.

“Women’s health research has been underfunded for too long. We are thrilled to have the support of Mewburn Ellis to invest in groundbreaking research that will improve our understanding of women’s health at all life stages and could lead to major breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment and care – improving the lives of women, girls and babies throughout the UK and globally,” said Wellbeing of Women CEO, Janet Lindsay.
