We are delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Newland to the newly created role of Chief Technology Officer (CTO), with responsibility for our technology strategy, AI adoption and digital transformation.
The appointment follows our introduction of Microsoft Copilot and specialist legal AI platforms Solve Intelligence and Legora. The new role separates strategic technology leadership from day-to-day IT operations, allowing Andy to focus on developing our technology capabilities and identifying opportunities to use AI and automation across our services.
Andy has been with us for 15 years, most recently serving as our IT Director. During this time, he led the team responsible for designing and building Castle, our bespoke case management system, and oversaw the introduction of new practice management systems, automation tools and AI-enabled applications. His team's work has also been recognised with a NetDocuments award for AI innovation.
As CTO, Andy will lead the development of our technology architecture. His priorities include expanding the use of AI in patent and legal work, automating manual processes and strengthening our approach to AI governance, security and responsible use.
The appointment also forms part of our continued investment in our business operations and growth capabilities. Philip Cartlidge will join us as Senior Growth Manager on 2 November 2026 from Dennemeyer, further strengthening our focus on business development and supporting clients across our specialist IP practices.
Commenting on the appointment, Managing Partner Richard Clegg said:
“AI is changing how intellectual property services are delivered, and we see significant opportunities to use these technologies to better support our clients. Andy has played a central role in developing our technology capabilities over the past 15 years, and his appointment as CTO reflects our commitment to building on that progress. Having dedicated leadership in this area will help us continue investing in innovation while maintaining the specialist expertise and quality of advice our clients expect.”
Andy Newland, Chief Technology Officer, added:
“AI and digital technologies are creating significant opportunities to improve how IP professionals work, from reducing routine tasks to making information more accessible and improving collaboration with clients. My focus will be on ensuring we adopt these technologies responsibly and in ways that deliver practical benefits. We have already made considerable progress, and I look forward to building on this by investing in the technology, skills and infrastructure needed to support the firm's future development.”
Richard is our Managing Partner and is responsible for leading the Management Board to devise and deliver the firm's strategy. He has extensive experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. He works closely with clients to establish a compelling commercial IP position. Richard and his team help clients to generate active and valuable patent portfolios, defending key patents on a global basis, conducting freedom to operate analyses and taking effective action against competitors.
