Callum is a UK and European patent attorney with expertise in the early stages of the patent lifecycle. He advises clients across a broad scope of technical areas within the Engineering space, from inventions relating to AI and electronics to complex mechanical systems.

The majority of Callum’s work focuses on invention capture and patent drafting, as well as large scale freedom-to-operate (FTO) projects and due diligence. He has been involved in several substantial drafting projects, preparing and coordinating multiple interlinked patent applications for delivery by the same deadline.

Callum’s work supports a diverse range of clients from start-ups and university spinouts making their first patent application to supporting in-house IP teams at large multinational companies. Callum enjoys getting to know the people behind the inventions and collaborating with his clients to understand their business needs. He regularly advises clients on how their IP strategy can complement their business needs.

Callum has a particular interest in medical technologies and is a member of our specialist group focusing on the use of AI in Medtech. Callum co-authored our report on AI in Medtech, which looks at the challenges in obtaining patent protection in this area and included an investigation into the patenting trends of this relatively new technical field.

Within Mewburn Ellis, Callum is actively involved with our in-house training program, delivering several tutorials for those preparing for UK and European patent qualifying examinations and organising regular CPD talks for the Engineering practice group.
