Mewburn's The Christie Challenge raises over £30,000!

Over the course of September 2021 to September 2022, Mewburn Ellis participated in The Christie Challenge. This saw Team Mewburn complete 6 different fundraising challenges, raising over £30,000 for The Christie — the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, treating more than 60,000 patients a year, and the first UK centre to be accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre.

Here's a quick rundown of Team Mewburn's 6 fundraising challenges:

1 - Walk of Hope (18 September 2021)

Mewburn Ellis began The Christie Challenge with the Knutsford Walk of Hope. The Mewburn team were blessed with wonderful weather, whilst walking 10 kilometres through Tatton Park.

2 - Wear something purple to work day (25 May 2022)

In conjunction with our beloved Queen Elizabeth II, we wore something purple to work to commemorate the late Queen’s Jubilee. We all enjoyed scones and a glass of fizz to celebrate the momentous occasion.

3 - Tour de Mewburn (20-24 June 2022)

Next, ‘Tour de Mewburn’ organised by Joe Newcombe and Rob Walker.

Rob Walker comments:

“From its conception in August 2021 to the five days of fantastic cycling across the country in June 2022 from Manchester to Bristol, the Tour de Mewburn was just such a fun event to organise and take part in. We were treated to a week of almost perfect weather for the tour and it was a pleasure to spend the week cycling through some beautiful countryside, chatting with everyone taking part and celebrating with lots more colleagues at the offices each day. With one in two people in the UK developing some form of cancer in their lifetime, almost everyone experiences a fight against cancer – either directly or through a family member or friend, making the work that The Christie does in providing support and care to those fighting cancer a cause we are all able to get behind. Joe and I were both thrilled with the response the Tour de Mewburn received and with everyone’s effort and generosity.”

A huge thank you to all of the cyclists who participated in the Tour de Mewburn and to everyone who supported them throughout their journey.

4 - Skydive (13 August 2022)

What an opportunity it was for me and my fellow sky-divers Julia Staples, Lesley Gardener, Louise Lever and Rachael Burrows.

Lesley Gardner comments:

“The skydive itself was a phenomenal experience, a reminder to live life to the full, and scary, but not as scary as dealing with an illness like cancer. I wanted to contribute because so many of us will be affected directly, or indirectly by this horrible disease. In addition to treatment, The Christie provides enhanced services to help people live as positively as they can throughout illness. I’ve seen the massive difference it made for one friend to access the wig fitting service, and for another to access complementary therapies between treatment.  These services helped them to deal with the challenge of the change in their physical appearance and the emotional impact of this illness.  Fundraising helps The Christie, to provide these services for FREE.”

It is safe to say we have nerves of steel. It was so exhilarating. It was especially nice to share this special memory with work colleagues. The weather was truly spectacular too. A perfect day and a memory I will personally treasure forever.

5 - Bake sale (8 September 2022)

We held a very successful bake sale in the Manchester office. Kora Seeray was outstanding with her organisational skills and promoting the sale throughout our building which meant we had lots of customers donating for the lovely bakes.

6 - Walk of Hope (17 September 2022)

We finished as we began with the Walk of Hope in September 2022. This is such a lovely event and I would encourage anyone to take part if you get the opportunity. We had great support again from everyone this year. The weather was not quite so kind to us the second time around, but that certainly didn’t dampen our spirits.

Dan Thornton and his three children thoroughly enjoyed the walk again and he commented:

“We thoroughly enjoyed both the Walks of Hope at Tatton Park, raising funds for The Christie. Spirits were high this year as usual and despite the rain. Our children loved the walking and meeting my friends from work. And they told their assemblies all about it – including why we all did it. We were all proud to raise sponsorship to support the vital work The Christie hospital does in supporting cancer patients in the North West. We look forward to walking again next year!”

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated and supported the events, donating not only your money but your time. It is heart warming to know that Team Mewburn contributed to the £13.2 million The Christie has raised this year. I am thankful we have been able to participate in The Christie Challenge to support a cause which is dear to mine and many other families' hearts.
