Christoph's practice focuses on German, European and international patent and utility model prosecution, as well as design applications before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Further focus of his work is on opposition, appeal and nullity proceedings, in particular before the German Federal Patent Court and the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office, as well as patent infringement proceedings before the German common courts. Christoph also advises on IP strategy and IP portfolio management as well as employee inventions in Germany. Christoph is spearheading our dedicated team of Future Mobility experts.

Christoph mainly works with large multinational corporations from the United States, Japan and Switzerland, as well as with start-ups, in particular from Switzerland and Singapore.

Background

Christoph is a graduate engineer (Dipl. Ing. Univ.) with a degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Munich. He also holds two Master of Laws degrees, an LL.M. from the University of Hagen with a focus on European Patent Litigation and an LL.M. from the Université de Strasbourg with a focus on IP Strategy and IP Management. Christoph is admitted as German and European Patent Attorney as well as European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. He started his patent attorney training in 2006 with a large Munich-based patent law firm. From 2013, he spent four years in Switzerland as Vice President and Head of Patents of a Swiss elevator manufacturer before joining Mewburn Ellis LLP as a partner in 2017 and co-opening the Munich office.

A key aspect of Christoph's work is German, EU and International Designs, where he heads Mewburn's European Designs practice. He also has extensive experience in German IP work, regularly representing clients before the German Patent and Trademark Office and the German Federal Patent Court, as well as the EPO and WIPO. Christoph regularly advises on freedom-to-operate and infringement and invalidity matters, as well as on related opinion work. Christoph also advises on IP strategy as well as on inventor compensation and the German Employee Invention Act.
