Jonathan has broad experience dealing with a wide range of inventions from computer-implemented inventions through to mechanical inventions. He has a particular interest in artificial intelligence and other mathematical areas, such as cryptography.

Jonathan is adept in all aspects of patent prosecution and supporting the release of new products through patent filing and freedom-to-operate activities. Jonathan also has experience in infringement and validity opinions, opposition work, and enforcement activities.

Jonathan has spent much of his career working on the patent portfolios of large multinational companies, including spending over a decade in-house. He also has considerable experience dealing with companies that have limited or no IP experience. He has gained this experience both in private practice and while in-house looking after newly acquired companies.

  • Computer-implemented inventions, including inventions with non-technical aspects such as mathematical methods or business methods

Background

Jonathan has an MSci in Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics from the University of Birmingham. Jonathan qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2005 and as a UK Patent attorney in 2007. Jonathan obtained the Higher Courts Litigation Certificate in 2016 and registered as a UPC Representative in 2023. Jonathan joined Mewburn Ellis in 2025.
