Jonny Bodey

Jonny is a UK and European Patent Attorney in the Engineering and ICT team.

Jonny has experience across a wide range of subject-matter, including quantum technologies, cardiac ablation apparatus, phacoemulsification systems, diagnostic testing devices and bicycle components.

Jonny has also worked throughout the patent life cycle, including invention mining, patent drafting, and patent prosecution at the EPO and the UKIPO. Jonny particularly enjoys the challenge of developing creative solutions to address complex, tricky cases. He has worked on several high-value patent oppositions at the EPO, both in attack and defence, as well as a design invalidity action at the EUIPO. He also has experience of preparing infringement and validity opinions, conducting freedom-to-operate analysis, and co-ordinating prosecution of patent families across multiple jurisdictions. Jonny also worked on a major due diligence project as part of a corporate acquisition.

Background

Jonny holds a triple first class Master’s degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) and a PhD in Quantum Physics from Magdalene College, Cambridge. His doctoral project developed an optical technique to manipulate an individual electron spin trapped in a solid-state semiconductor device. This technique enabled the electron spin to be exploited to control the quantum state of the nuclear spins of the surrounding environment, holding promise for the implementation of a quantum memory.

During his studies, he won a series of prizes for outstanding academic performance, and was elected to the Stothert Bye-Fellowship of Magdalene College in the third year of his PhD. His work has been published in several high-impact journals, including Science and Nature Physics, and he took the opportunity to give presentations at several conferences across Europe and North America.

Jonny entered the patent profession in 2021, qualifying as a European Patent Attorney in 2025 and as a UK Patent Attorney in 2026. As part of this process, Jonny was awarded the Ballantyne prize for passing the 2025 FD4 examination (UK infringement & validity) with the highest mark.

He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2026 from another leading IP firm.
