Read our law and practice guidesKatie is a qualified UK and European patent attorney working in our Life Sciences team. She has experience managing global IP portfolios of all sizes for clients in the life sciences space, including pharma, start-up, and academic clients. Katie has a strong appreciation of global IP strategy, and regularly prosecutes patent applications before the EPO. Katie also has a wealth of experience drafting new patent applications relating to antibody therapeutics, cancer biomarkers, and other technologies.
Katie is particularly interested in advanced therapeutics, because of the curative power that cell and gene therapies hold. She is passionate about scientific innovation in this area, and understands the importance of intellectual property for translating these developments into improved patient outcomes. Katie has authored several blog articles in this field published on the Mewburn Ellis website.
Areas of expertise
Background
Katie has an academic background in cancer cell biology. She completed a PhD in Cell Biology at UCL, where her research focussed on using high spatiotemporal imaging techniques to investigate mechanisms of chromosome instability in cancer. Katie utilised CRISPR activation techniques to upregulate gene expression at physiological levels, and used machine learning models to develop an image analysis pipeline capable of identifying aneuploidy and chromosome segregation errors.
Katie also has a first class degree in biochemistry from the University of Birmingham, and a masters in cancer cell biology from the University of Sussex.
She joined Mewburn Ellis in 2021 and qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2025.
