Matt has extensive experience in prosecuting chemistry patent applications in Europe, as well as in other major jurisdictions such as the United States, Japan and China through his work with foreign attorneys. He is experienced in drafting patent applications, always ensuring the client’s inventive concept is properly protected. Matt has also worked on comprehensive freedom-to-operate and invalidity projects and is regularly involved in contentious matters, including the preparation of oppositions against European patents.
Matt takes a methodical approach to his work, making sure to meet a client’s specific needs, whether they are a startup with little patent experience, or a multinational corporation with a dedicated IP team.
Qualifications and Technical Background
Matt holds a first-class joint honours MChem degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Leeds. During his time at university, he participated in two research projects in very different areas of chemistry. The first investigated computational modelling of interstellar reactions, and the second involved synthesising and analysing composite MOF-polymer membranes for use in fuel cells.

Professional Career
Matt joined Mewburn Ellis LLP in 2022 and passed the Bournemouth University Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law with Distinction in 2023. Matt qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2025.
As a result of Matt’s efforts in his UK qualifying examinations, he passed all four exams in his first attempt and was awarded prizes for attaining the best result in the “IP Law and Practice” paper, the best result in the “Amendment of Specifications” paper, and the best overall result in the UK.
