Working primarily in the chemical and materials science fields, Matthew has significant experience of the intricacies of the EPO. He advises and assists clients with all stages of drafting, prosecution, opposition and appeal before the EPO.

Clients

Many of Matthew’s clients are Japanese and Chinese businesses that are seeking European patent protection. These include multinational corporations in the fields of high-performance ceramics and carbon fibre technologies, as well as pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies. He also works with several research institutions and university technology transfer departments across Europe, in areas as diverse as energy storage, filtration, additive manufacturing and construction.

Background

Matthew has a Master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2006, qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2010, and became a partner in 2015. A frequent visitor to Japan, he delivers training seminars and lectures on European IP practice directly to clients and to wider groups via organisations such as JIPA and JPAA.
