Sofia handles all aspects of trade mark work, with a particular focus on trade mark searches, contentious proceedings such as complex families of oppositions and similar actions in multiple jurisdictions, and managing extensive international trade mark portfolios. She is experienced in drafting and negotiating settlement agreements, often in tandem with contentious proceedings.

Sofia has extensive experience of oppositions, revocation and invalidity actions in the UK as well as EUTM oppositions. She has represented clients at hearings before the UK-IPO and in appeals before the Appointed Person, while also being involved in appeals to the English courts and the European General Court.
Sofia has also handled a successful DRS domain name complaint at Nominet, which included a data release request to identify the adverse party.

Sofia works for a wide range of UK and international clients, including individuals, SMEs and multinationals across a diverse range of areas including pharmaceuticals, food and drink, computer games, watches and jewellery, defence apparatus, and molecular biology.


Sofia has a degree in law (with French) from the University of Birmingham and a diploma in French Legal Studies from the Université de Limoges, France. She joined Mewburn Ellis in 1996, qualified as a UK Chartered Trade Mark Attorney in 2003 and was a partner from 2004 – 2018, before choosing to step back and focus on client work. Sofia became a Trade Mark Director in 2019. She is a member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and AIPPI, having previously been a member of the UK Council and Events Committee of AIPPI.

She has previously spent several months on secondment to a US law firm and has also worked as a translator and trade mark assistant in Spain. Sofia has a special interest in Japan where she regularly gives lectures on aspects of UK and EU trade mark law.

Sofia has been involved with EUIPO work from when the office first opened in 1996. As permitted by the rules following Brexit, she continues to handle EUIPO cases which were pending as of 31 December 2020.
