Toby is a dual-qualified UK (Chartered) and European patent attorney in our Engineering & ICT practice group. He works on patent drafting and prosecution before the UKIPO, EPO and USPTO as well as large-scale freedom-to-operate (FTO) projects including patent landscaping and competitor awareness reports.

Clients

Toby works with a range of clients in the UK, Europe, and the US. They include UK-based SMEs as well as multinational companies specialising in domestic appliances, consumer electronics, beverages, and sportswear.

Interests

Toby has a particular interest in aerospace and is part of our Space Technology team. He worked on the data analysis for our 2025 special report – Ascending trends in Space Technology – which looks at how the global space sector is developing, highlighting patterns and trends in the sector using intellectual property data. He regularly attends London-based space events including those organised by Space South Central and the London Space Network.

Awards

In 2024, Toby was awarded two prizes by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) for his performance in the UK Final Diploma exams – the Gill Prize for the highest aggregate mark, and the Michael Jones Prize for the highest mark in the amendment paper.

Background

Toby has a first-class mechanical engineering degree from the University of Cambridge. His master’s research project was based at the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure & Construction (CSIC) and involved the development of a new vibration serviceability assessment device using prototype, ultra-low noise accelerometers.

He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2021 qualifying as a UK (Chartered) Patent Attorney in 2024 and a European Patent Attorney in 2025.
