National Literacy Trust

This page is a celebration of our work with the National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity that empowers children, young people, and adults with the literacy skills they need to succeed.

Literacy changes everything. It gives you the tools to get the most out of life, and the power to shape your future. It opens the door to the life you want. But low literacy is inextricably linked to poverty. Over the last 30 years, we have continued to work with people who need us the most, supporting schools, families and communities on a local and national level.

Our Involvement with the National Literacy Trust

Literacy is the foundation of opportunity, and at Mewburn Ellis, we’re proud to support the National Literacy Trust in its mission to ensure everyone has the skills they need to succeed. From 2024-2026, we’ve contributed over £80,000 to support programmes that tackle low literacy, break down barriers, and open up new possibilities for children and families.

With this funding and our direct involvement, we’re helping bring literacy to life - from immersive school workshops that spark creativity and confidence, to 300 curated book packs placed in public parks to make reading more accessible. We’re also proud to fund the Manchester Library Trail, supporting community-led book sharing across Greater Manchester.

Our partnership is a long-term commitment to building brighter futures, where every child can grow up with the power of words at their fingertips.

Libraries for Primaries Initiative

What is Libraries for Primaries?

This is an initiative set up by The National Literacy Trust (NLT) to help schools that face real challenges and currently lack the resources to create welcoming, inspiring library spaces. Together, with NLT we will deliver inclusive books, reading zone furniture, training for teachers and librarians and a memorable author visit to spark a lifelong love of reading.

Why is it needed?

Reading for pleasure is strongly linked to academic success, mental wellbeing, empathy and social development. Yet many children still face major barriers to accessing books and engaging reading spaces. Currently, 1 in 10 children and young people do not own a single book - rising to 1 in 8 among those from disadvantaged backgrounds. At the same time, the attainment gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their more affluent peers continues to widen, worsened by the ongoing Cost of Living Crisis.

School libraries can play a crucial role in closing the gap. Yet 1 in 7 state primary schools in England have no dedicated library or reading space - a figure that rises to 1 in 4 in the most disadvantaged communities. Libraries are more than just a book collection, they are safe, inspiring environments that provide free access to diverse stories, support literacy development and help level the playing field for all children.

What impact will it have?

To date, the initiative have revitalised around 1,500 school libraries and trained 3,000 teachers and support staff, creating thriving reading cultures within schools. Our £40,000 donation will enable delivery of Libraries for Primaries in four locations: Bristol, London, Manchester and Cambridge. In each location, an identified primary school with significant need will have a comprehensive library transformation package delivered, more details on this can be found below.

Meet our NLT Champion

Rachel Collier

IP Support, Paralegal, Literacy Champion

“I am loving being a Literacy Champion, I keep my Little Free Libraries well stocked and get to help out at amazing events, when I see children getting really excited about reading, it just makes me so happy!

I believe that actions speak louder than words and that you can inspire others by doing something small, or by giving your time, such as picking some litter up or giving something away to someone who needs it. I try to be the best version of myself every day, and to give what I can, where I can. All those little things add up to something big and unimaginable. I dream the impossible and believe you can achieve anything you set your mind and heart on.”
