What is Libraries for Primaries?
This is an initiative set up by The National Literacy Trust (NLT) to help schools that face real challenges and currently lack the resources to create welcoming, inspiring library spaces. Together, with NLT we will deliver inclusive books, reading zone furniture, training for teachers and librarians and a memorable author visit to spark a lifelong love of reading.
Why is it needed?
Reading for pleasure is strongly linked to academic success, mental wellbeing, empathy and social development. Yet many children still face major barriers to accessing books and engaging reading spaces. Currently, 1 in 10 children and young people do not own a single book - rising to 1 in 8 among those from disadvantaged backgrounds. At the same time, the attainment gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their more affluent peers continues to widen, worsened by the ongoing Cost of Living Crisis.
School libraries can play a crucial role in closing the gap. Yet 1 in 7 state primary schools in England have no dedicated library or reading space - a figure that rises to 1 in 4 in the most disadvantaged communities. Libraries are more than just a book collection, they are safe, inspiring environments that provide free access to diverse stories, support literacy development and help level the playing field for all children.
What impact will it have?
To date, the initiative have revitalised around 1,500 school libraries and trained 3,000 teachers and support staff, creating thriving reading cultures within schools. Our £40,000 donation will enable delivery of Libraries for Primaries in four locations: Bristol, London, Manchester and Cambridge. In each location, an identified primary school with significant need will have a comprehensive library transformation package delivered, more details on this can be found below.
