Look for a Book: Spreading the Joy of Reading in Local Communities

At Mewburn Ellis, we’re passionate about supporting literacy and helping children build a lifelong love of reading. That's why we're proud to launch Look for a Book, a new initiative in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be distributing 300 specially curated book packs in community spaces near each of our UK offices, bringing books directly to children and families who may not otherwise have easy access to them.

What is Look for a Book?

The idea is simple: surprise, delight, and inspire.

We’ll be placing book packs in public places such as parks, community centres, benches, and other accessible spots for children to discover and take home. Each pack is designed to feel like a little treasure and spark joy through reading.

Each book pack includes:

  • A waterproof, reusable zip bag

  • A free children’s book, suitable for ages 3–13

  • A bookmark

  • A flyer for parents and caregivers with tips for reading at home

  • A flyer explaining the purpose of the initiative and our partnership with the National Literacy Trust

These packs are completely free of charge and are created to encourage reading in a way that’s accessible, inclusive, and engaging, right where families live, play and spend time.

Why this matters

Reading for pleasure is one of the strongest indicators of future success for children, academically, socially, and emotionally. Yet not all children have access to books at home, and literacy gaps continue to widen, especially in disadvantaged areas.

By placing these book packs directly into local communities, we hope to:

  • Inspire children to read more

  • Support families with easy, no-pressure access to books

  • Help build a culture of reading beyond the classroom

  • Bring small moments of joy, surprise and connection

This is just one part of our broader partnership with the National Literacy Trust, which also includes funding school libraries and supporting national campaigns to promote literacy. You can read more about our work together here.
