Our quantum technology team works with innovators across the range of quantum technologies including quantum sensing technology, quantum communications technology and quantum computing. With a strong academic background in quantum physics, our team has a breadth of experience and understanding in this technically demanding technology needed to advise you on how to build a strong IP position.

Our quantum technology team includes attorneys spread throughout our offices in Europe whose knowledge has a strong focus in this field, with backgrounds in theoretical atomic physics, quantum optics, light-matter interactions and computational modelling of quantum processes. With this knowledge base, we are able to offer our clients the deep level of understanding needed to work alongside them as trusted advisors.

Quantum computers are no longer confined to theoretical musings, they are now a reality. By harnessing unique quantum properties such as ‘superposition’ and ‘entanglement’ of quantum states to perform computations, scientists and engineers have developed processors able to perform quantum computations. Advances in quantum sensing and communications technology also continue to accelerate. Our quantum technology team takes pride in keeping abreast of this rapidly developing field by actively engaging with enterprises and decision-makers in the sector and sharing their insights with the wider quantum technology community. This active engagement gives our team a broader understanding of the range of challenges and strategies for commercialising quantum technology.

From quantum software development to quantum global positioning systems or quantum telecommunications technology, we are well placed to assist clients in obtaining IP rights in this area and we are excited to be working with companies at the forefront of this innovative field.

Special Report

EPO Opposition Trends in Engineering, Electronics and Software

In autumn 2020, we analysed more than 8000 opposition cases filed at the European Patent Office (EPO) over the last 12 years, studying the timelines for hundreds of engineering, electronics and software oppositions.

The research enabled us to see how oppositions have been affected by procedural changes at the European Patent Office and by the Covid-19 pandemic. With a focus on Transport, Medical Devices, Telecommunications and Software, the report also looks at how opposition outcomes vary across the four different technology sectors and which players are the most active.

Mewburn Ellis

Mewburn Ellis Forward is a biannual publication that celebrates the best of innovation and exploration. Through its pages we hope to inform and entertain, but also to encourage discussion about the most compelling developments taking place in the scientific and entrepreneurial world. Along the way, we’ll engage with the IP challenges that international organisations face every day.
