Biomaterials

It is many years since the first biomaterials entered onto the marketplace. Their uses have greatly expanded since then, and a wide variety of for example surgical procedures rely on biomaterials for their efficacy. Sitting at the boundary of medical and material sciences, expert knowledge of the routes to IP protection for such inventions is essential.

With a wide pool of talent to draw from in the fields of chemistry, engineering and life sciences, we can provide advice about all manner of different biomaterials, their uses, development, testing and production. We have worked extensively with products such as stents, bone grafts or growth seed materials, optical lenses and implants, dental implants, surgical meshes, ligament replacements and so on. Each presents unique challenges, and may require cross-sector teams to protect to their fullest.

For example, a new material may be patentable but its method of deployment in a therapeutic or surgical context may or may not be, depending on the jurisdiction and case specifics. By drawing on our broad experience, we can make sure that a patent application is drafted in the right way to protect all possibilities.

Similarly, the advantages of a new biomaterial may be seen from a variety of different perspectives. It may be a known material altered for biological use; it may be a known biomaterial altered for a more specific or different biological use. Inventions in these realms and more are patentable with the right strategy, and our experts are well placed to help you find that.

Special Report

Green IP

Our report examines the role of patents in making innovative ‘green’ technologies into a reality as well as how the patent landscape can be used to identify opportunities for partnering, collaboration and investment.

We share our enthusiasm and admiration for commercially-focused innovation across a diverse range of technologies, from repurposing carbon dioxide to make protein-rich foods, to the multi-faceted approach to a circular plastics economy. We also discuss the tantalising prospect of AI-mediated renewable energy supply, and the harnessing of battery tech from the EV boom to drive energy efficiency in consumer devices. This report reflects our passion for technology solutions that tackle our shared global challenge.
