Technology Innovations

Innovation in the healthcare industry is being driven by an aging population often coupled with economic pressure to reduce costs. In addition to the advances we are seeing in pharmaceuticals, vaccines and biologics that our chemistry and life science patent teams handle, we are seeing an incredible growth in developments in the medical technology sector. Indeed, UK tax breaks and Government investment over recent years have supported the UK medical technology industry to become a world leader.

Made up of a highly qualified team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, physicists and material scientists, our Engineering patent team is well set up to assist with IP protection across the entire range of medical technologies. We have an impressive track record of obtaining robust IP for medical devices from deceptively simple stents or catheters through to obviously high-tech implantable sensors and medical robotics. And our material scientists have extensive experience of biomaterials and their applications in medical technology

Many of our Engineering patent team are also very skilled in patenting software inventions meaning they are well placed to assist in protecting developments in medical imaging and its associated diagnostics using software incorporating machine learning and AI. We also have an interdisciplinary bioinformatics/digital health team which is one of the largest in Europe.

At Mewburn Ellis, our approach is always personal and client-focussed. We have the breadth and depth of academic expertise coupled with strong commercial awareness so that we can truly understand and help achieve our medical technology clients’ business aims.

EPO Opposition Trends in Engineering, Electronics and Software-compressed

Special Report

EPO Opposition Trends in Engineering, Electronics and Software

In autumn 2020, we analysed more than 8000 opposition cases filed at the European Patent Office (EPO) over the last 12 years, studying the timelines for hundreds of engineering, electronics and software oppositions.

The research enabled us to see how oppositions have been affected by procedural changes at the European Patent Office and by the Covid-19 pandemic. With a focus on Transport, Medical Devices, Telecommunications and Software, the report also looks at how opposition outcomes vary across the four different technology sectors and which players are the most active.
